5 Things Every New Golfer Should Know

5 Things Every New Golfer Should Know

Hello Midspring Family! My name is Emilia and I picked up a golf club for the very first time this year at 26 years old... and I can already tell golf and I are about to have a life-long love affair. If you're like me and are wondering how to get your golf career started, or improved, here are my top 5 tips and tricks for acing the course this spring!

1. Learn the Lingo

Aside from mastering the athletic challenges of golf, newcomers may also be surprised by all of the terminology you'll need to know to sound like a pro on the course. Here are a few good ones to know:

A "mulligan" is a do-over shot without a penalty stroke...if you tee off and your shot goes into the woods, consider shouting "Mulligan!" to save yourself the trouble of foraging through the woods for your lost ball.

A "slice" is when a golf shot curves from left to right in the air, whereas a "hook" is when it curves right to left. With enough practice, you'll be hitting balls straight down the fairway in no time.

An "eagle" is a term that signifies a golfer has made her shot two under par on a hole. In some cases, a golfer can shoot a "double eagle" (also known as an "albatross") which signifies a score of three under par! A "birdie" represents one under par, and a "bogey" is what she calls a score one over par... we try not to get double and triple bogies but, hey, nobody's perfect!

2. It's Cool to Warm Up

Even though golf is a low-impact sport, warming up is crucial to protecting your body and ensuring your game is the best it can be. Incorporating some dynamic stretching across your arms, back, and legs is an easy way to help avoid injuries and build endurance in the long-run.

3. Practice Makes Permanent: Invest in Lessons

The saying's true: practice makes perfect, but it also makes permanent. The best gift you can give yourself as a new golfer are a few starter lessons to ensure you don't form any bad habits. If you're not yet ready for lessons, consider finding some friends or mentors who might know a thing or two about improving your game and, better yet, who can join you out on the course this spring! Even the pro’s have lessons to continually improve. There is no shame in that game!

4. Some Days All You Can Control is Your Outfit

When I first started golfing, one of my sincerest challenges was finding appropriate yet fashionable attire that I could sport on the course. A lot of the options I came across were tired, unflattering, and unfeminine — I wanted nothing to do with them! Midspring offers the perfect solution to women like myself who value performance athleticwear that makes them feel good inside and out, without sacrificing fashion for function.

If I were a new golfer and needed some elevated basics, here are some of my Midspring picks that function just as well on and off the course!

5. The 19th Hole: What It's All About!

The last and best tip for a new golfer is to create community around the sport. After a round of 18 holes, there's nothing better than the watering hole! Grabbing a drink with friends or a bite to eat is a great way to keep the game social and create partnerships between other players who can serve as friends both on and off the course. I've found that my friendships made through golf have encouraged my improvements and dedications to the sport and, most importantly, have made the game that much more fun!
